After arrival, begin your journey with an introduction to the historic town and its extraordinary mountain setting. In the afternoon, explore some of Lalibela's remarkable rock-hewn churches and learn about the living Ethiopian Orthodox traditions that have continued here for centuries.

Return to town for lunch at Maed Restaurant, in the afternoon, Visit some of the most important churches in the southern group, including Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, and Bet Amanuel.
Continue to the spectacular Bet Giyorgis (St. George), one of Lalibela's most iconic churches. The church is carved entirely from a single block of rock and is connected to the surrounding complex by a deep trench.

Gondar was the capital of the Ethiopian Empire for centuries and offers a completely different chapter of the country's history.
Visit the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where castles and palaces reflect the architectural and political history of the Gondarine period.
Continue to Fasilides' Bath and, if time permits, visit Debre Birhan Selassie Church, famous for its extraordinary traditional paintings and angel-filled ceiling.

Day 5

Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the capital of Ethiopia's Afar Region. Upon arrival at Semera Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our experienced team, including skilled 4WD drivers, a professional cook, local guides, and an official tour leader from the Tourism Authority. A police escort will accompany the expedition, and all camping equipment will be prepared before departure.
After breakfast, begin the scenic drive across the dramatic Afar Desert toward Ert Ale Volcano. Upon arrival, continue to the camping area located on the rim of the caldera. In the late afternoon, at around 5:30 PM, start the approximately one-hour hike to the summit.
Although the famous lava lake is currently inactive, Ert Ale remains one of the world's most fascinating shield volcanoes. From the summit, enjoy breathtaking views of the volcanic crater, rugged lava fields, and the unique geological landscape created by centuries of volcanic activity.

Wake up early, around 5:00 AM, to witness a spectacular sunrise over the volcanic landscape before returning to the campsite for breakfast.
After breakfast, drive to Lake Afdera, a beautiful saltwater lake located in the heart of the Danakil Depression. Surrounded by dramatic desert scenery, the lake offers a refreshing opportunity to enjoy a swim in its warm, mineral-rich waters.
Continue the journey to Hamedela, the gateway to Dallol, where you will set up camp for the night. In the late afternoon, visit Lake Assale (Karum Lake) to admire its breathtaking sunset over the vast salt flats—one of the most unforgettable views in the Danakil Depression.
Overnight in an open-air campsite with comfortable mattresses, pillows clean bed linens, and ample drinking water to keep you hydrated throughout your stay in this remarkable desert environment.

Wake up early and drive to Lake Assale (Lake Karum) to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the vast salt flats of the Danakil Depression.
After sunrise, continue to Dallol, one of the most extraordinary geothermal landscapes on Earth. Explore its colorful hydrothermal fields, bubbling hot springs, mineral terraces, and vibrant sulfur deposits. The constantly changing shades of yellow, green, orange, and white create a surreal landscape unlike anywhere else in the world, making Dallol one of Ethiopia's most remarkable natural wonders.
Next, drive to the fascinating salt and mud formations beneath the Dallol crater, where unique geological features reveal another side of this incredible environment.

After breakfast, depart Arba Minch and travel south toward Turmi, passing through the beautiful landscapes of southern Ethiopia.
En route, visit a Konso community and explore the traditional villages and distinctive cultural landscape for which the Konso people are renowned. Learn about their terraced farming, traditional houses, community life and long-preserved cultural traditions. This provides an authentic introduction to the diverse cultures of southern Ethiopia before continuing deeper into the Omo Valley.
After the visit, continue the drive toward Turmi and arrive at your lodge in the evening.

After an early breakfast, begin a full-day cultural exploration of the Lower Omo Valley.
Travel to a Karo community along the Omo River and learn about their traditional way of life, distinctive body painting, ceremonies and relationship with the river.
Continue toward the Dassanech area, where you will experience another fascinating culture of the Omo Valley and learn about their pastoral lifestyle and traditional customs.
Return toward Turmi and spend time with the Hamer community, visiting a traditional village and learning about their daily life, houses, clothing, livestock and cultural traditions.

After breakfast, depart Turmi and drive north toward Jinka for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
Along the way, stop to meet and photograph members of the Bena community, including young Bena herders traditionally seen walking with long sticks. These sticks are an important part of their pastoral lifestyle, helping them manage and protect their livestock from potential dangers while moving through the countryside.
Continue to Key Afer, where you will have an opportunity to meet members of the Mursi community and learn about their traditional way of life, cultural practices and pastoral traditions. Since Mago National Park is currently closed, this visit provides an alternative opportunity to experience Mursi culture around Key Afer without entering the park.
After the cultural experience, continue to Jinka Airport for your domestic flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, your 11-Day Ethiopia: Fire, Faith & Indigenous Cultures journey comes to an end.
