Fly to South Luangwa, transfer to Kafunta River Lodge
You fly from Lusaka to Mfuwe, where you are met and driven to Kafunta River Lodge, located on the bank of the Luangwa River in South Luangwa National Park. Spend 3 nights in their Standard chalet, a slightly elevated wood and thatch chalet with its own bathroom and a veranda that looks out over the river.
The main area has the same view, with a fire pit area, a large lounge and dining space and a pool. The area in front of camp is frequented by elephant, baboon, giraffe, zebra and other wildlife, with the river beyond home to hippo, elephant and other game come down to the water in front of camp.
The wildlife hide is the perfect place to watch over the floodplain and waterhole, haven for all sorts of animals. Be it a family of elephants, a few giraffes, an inquisitive puku, a discreet water-monitor lizard, there is always something to observe.
All meals are included, starting with an early continental breakfast before you set off on game drive, an early lunch, high tea and dinner.

Day 2-3
Explore the South Luangwa
Explore the South Luangwa
Kafunta River Lodge has easy access over the Luangwa River into the park. When the river is flowing strongly, they use a nearby pontoon to cross the river. When the water levels drop in October, the river is low enough to cross in the Landcruiser. The main gate is also used on longer days spent exploring further north.
South Luangwa has large numbers of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, wild dog and lion, and it is one of the best places in Africa to find leopard. Your guide knows the park well and spend the drives tracking and reading the bush with you.
Kafunta Lodge offers a variety of activities, including game drives (morning, afternoon, and night), bush walks, village and cultural tours, and a wellness spa.
Walking is one of the best ways to experience South Luangwa, which is regarded as the home of the walking safari in Africa. You set out in the cool of the early morning with a guide and an armed national park scout, and cover a few kilometres at an unhurried pace.

Transfer to Nkonzi Bush Camp
Transfer to Nkonzi Bush Camp
This morning, you leave Kafunta and drive through the park for about one hour to Nkonzi Bush Camp. This is a classic old-world authentic bush camp set in an exclusive area of South Luangwa National Park, on the banks of the seasonal Mushilashi River. This is how safaris started and there is something rewarding in spending time here and enjoying the different experience from a lodge stay.
Owner run, the accommodation is in simple canvas tents with solar lighting, ensuite open air bathrooms with the safari bucket shower and some comfy loungers overlooking the dry river bed, all under an extra canopy of reeds. The main area is comfortable, with dining taking place often in the river bed under the watchful eye of the parks ranger stationed in camp.
Expect homestyle and well made food, a great hospitality team and a tranquil environment.

Day 5-6
Explore with Nkonzi
Explore with Nkonzi
The main activity at Nkonzi Camp is walking. You set off directly from camp and return a few hours later to camp. Guided walks take you through the bush at an unhurried pace, where tracks, birds, insects and trees matter as much as the large animals. There are almost no other people in the area, so you hear the bush at night and see it at first light without other vehicles around.
Game drives are also available for the evenings or in the mornings if you prefer or if it is too hot, like in October.
If you want to be properly out in nature, away from the crowds and the comforts of a lodge, this is the part of the safari that delivers it.
This camp is only open from June to October each year.

Fly to Lower Zambezi & Kutali Camp
Leave Nkonzi and drive to Mfuwe Airport, with about 45 minutes to the park gate and a further 45 minutes to the airport. You fly on a direct flight between Mfuwe and Jeki in the Lower Zambezi which is handy and in no time at all you have landed. Your guide from Kutali Camp will be waiting to take you in to camp.
Kutali stands in a beautiful forest of Winterthorn trees on the bank of the Zambezi, which gives good shade and views over the river. Each tent is thoughtfully positioned to capture sweeping river views and designed for comfort, featuring high-quality linen, comfortable beds, flushing toilets, running water, and traditional bucket showers.
The central stretch-canvas main area, shaded beneath magnificent Winterthorn trees, provides a perfect setting for dining, relaxing with a book, or simply watching the ever-changing wildlife along the river.
