Okavango delta
Okavango delta
The Okavango Delta is a vast, landlocked inland wetland in northern Botswana that forms where the Okavango River spills out into the sand of the Kalahari Desert.
• Unique Inland System: Unlike typical deltas that empty into an ocean or sea, the Okavango’s waters evaporate and transpire into the desert.
• The massive floodwaters take about a month to travel down the river and peak locally between June and August (Botswana's dry winter season), swelling the delta to around 15,000 to 22,000 square kilometers.
• Biodiversity: Home to over 130 mammals (including the world's largest elephant population of around 130,000), 480+ bird species, fish, and reptiles.
• The "Big Five" & Endangered Species: Supports lions, leopards, buffalos, elephants, rhinos, and endangered species like African wild dogs and cheetahs.
