Blantyre - Majete Wildlife Reserve
After arrival at the airport, you will be met and taken to Majete Wildlife Reserve. Long neglected, Majete has been the scene of an impressive relocation program. To date, 2,559 animals from 14 species have been reintroduced, including the Big Five: leopard, elephant, buffalo, black rhino, and lion. Other mammals reintroduced were eland, sable, waterbuck, nyala, hartebeest, impala, zebra, warthog, and bushpig. This makes Majete one of the only reserves in Malawi where the Big 5 can be viewed all year round. You will check in at Thawale Lodge, situated within the park in the Shire Valley, and in the afternoon (time-dependent), you will go on your first shared afternoon safari drive to look out for all those mentioned animals.

The plateau is a mountain standing at 1,800 m, with peaks topping 2,000 m. It has vast tracts of cedar, pine and cypress but elsewhere the vegetation is wild and mixed. Like the forests, the plateau top is criss-crossed by streams and there are tumbling waterfalls and still lakes.

After breakfast, go and explore the plateau. There is plenty of hiking, trekking and walking through the forests, alongside the streams and to connect the viewpoints around the edge. There is always something to see on the plateau as well as from it. Wildlife includes leopards, although sightings are very rare. More in evidence are giant butterflies and, on the lower slopes, baboons. Birdlife includes the long-crested eagle and the augur buzzard. Fly-fishing for trout is possible in season and there is a very good stables that offers horse riding even to novices.
