Empakaai Crater is one of the most beautiful craters in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. From the crater rim, you have a fantastic view into the craters' green paradise. A large portion of its floor is covered with a lake and it is 3,200 m above sea level. The wall rises 300 m above the crater floor and the crater is about 8 km in diameter. Because of the high altitude, the area is often shrouded in mist. Combined with the emerald colour of the lake, it creates an atmosphere straight out of a fairy tale. It is a unique place for walking to explore the forested crater and the variety of its wildlife and flora paradise.

"Magnificent wildlife, the only living things which look as if they really belonged to it are the wild animals. Between the animals and Africa, there is an understanding that human beings have not yet earned" - Laurens van der Post, Venture to the Interior, 1963.
Today, the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Maasai Mara National Reserve across the border in Kenya, protect the greatest and most varied collection of terrestrial wildlife on earth, and one of the last great migratory systems still intact.
