Nairobi - Samburu National Reserve

After breakfast at the hotel, proceed on your drive to Samburu with brief, leisurely stops along the way to enjoy the views. You will also stop briefly at the equator line. Arrive at Samburu for check-in at the camp and in time for a hot lunch. Thereafter, enjoy your first afternoon game drive in this unique reserve.

The game reserve is renowned for its rare species of animals unique to the park, namely the long-necked gerenuk, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Beisa oryx. The elusive Kenyan leopard is known to often visit the park, especially in the evenings. Other Kenyan wildlife in the park includes cheetahs and lions, as well as elephants, buffalos, and hippos. Birdlife is as plentiful as wildlife in Samburu National Reserve and boasts over 350 different species of birds including vultures, kingfishers, marabous, bateleurs, guinea fowls, and Somali ostriches.

Day 3

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve

After breakfast, proceed for a half-day game-viewing drive or early morning and afternoon game drives.

The sharp contrast of colors is the most remarkable feature of the trio of the Samburu, Shaba, and Buffalo Springs National Reserves. See the hazy blues of the surrounding hills and an infinite sky, the chocolate brown of the Uaso Nyiro River, and the white dusty soils interspaced with the vivid greens of semi-desert vegetation. The prehistoric-looking doum palm (the only palm tree with branches), is scattered amongst the granite boulders and ancient black lava flows found in the Shaba Reserve.

Samburu is often considered the country’s best leopard-viewing area. Sightings of prides of lions, cheetahs, monolithic herds of elephants, and buffaloes in all the reserves are practically guaranteed. The birdlife in this area, ranging from the sand grouse to the multi-colored kingfisher and spectacular eagle and falcon, is as striking for its diversity as for its colorfulness.

Day 5

Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara National Reserve

Have breakfast at the luxury camp and continue on a sunrise game drive with picnic lunch boxes for a full-day exploration of the wilderness. Dream of Africa and chances are that you dream of the Masai Mara. This huge expanse of gently rolling grassland - specked with flat-topped acacia trees and trampled by massive herds of zebras and wildebeest - is the ultimate African cliché. For once, the reality lives up to the image!

The Masai Mara, which comprises not just the famous reserve but also around a dozen community conservancies, several group ranches, and numerous Maasai villages, is for many people not just the highlight of their Kenyan adventure but the very reason they came in the first place.
