You leave the island behind with a morning flight from Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro, where your guide is waiting. From there you head into Tarangire National Park, a landscape of ancient baobabs and the largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania. You game-drive through the afternoon elephant, zebra and, often, lion in the long grass before continuing up to the highland town of Karatu for the night.

Day 2
Southern Serengeti - Ndutu
Southern Serengeti - Ndutu
After breakfast you climb through the Ngorongoro highlands and descend onto the open southern plains, crossing into the Ndutu region where the calving season unfolds. The change is sudden and unforgettable: the grass opens flat to every horizon, and the herds appear wildebeest and zebra in their tens of thousands, newborn calves already finding their legs. You spend the afternoon on a game drive among them before reaching your camp on the plains.

Day 3
Ndutu Full Day
Ndutu Full Day
A full day where the migration is at its most concentrated. Through February, the short-grass plains around Ndutu fill with vast herds, and as many as eight thousand calves are born in a single day. That abundance of vulnerable young draws Africa's great predators into the open lion prides on the move, cheetah hunting across the flats, hyena never far behind so the full cycle of birth and survival plays out in front of you. You take a picnic lunch out on the plains and stay out for the best of the light, returning to camp at dusk.

Day 4
Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater
This morning you make your way to the Ngorongoro Crater and descend some 600 metres to its floor a self-contained world that is home to black rhino, lion, elephant and flamingo-pink shallows, and one of the few places you might complete the Big Five in a single drive. After a relaxed lunch you ascend the rim and transfer to Arusha.
