Windhoek to Kalahari-Kalahari Desert Safari & Sundowner Experience

Windhoek to Kalahari-Kalahari Desert Safari & Sundowner Experience

After meeting your guide in Windhoek or at the airport, journey south through Namibia’s open landscapes toward the Kalahari Desert. Arrive in time for lunch and relaxation before your first desert experience.

In the late afternoon, enjoy a guided sundowner nature drive on a private reserve near Kalahari Desert. Unlike the towering dunes of the Namib, the Kalahari is characterised by gently rolling red sand dunes covered in golden grass and acacia vegetation.

The late afternoon light transforms the landscape into deep orange and red tones, creating excellent photography opportunities. Wildlife sightings may include oryx, springbok, giraffe, zebra, blue wildebeest, ostrich and smaller desert-adapted species becoming active toward sunset.

End the drive atop a red dune with drinks and snacks while watching the African sunset over the vast Kalahari wilderness.

Visit the famous Quiver Tree Forest, one of Namibia’s most iconic photography locations, where ancient Aloe dichotoma trees stand scattered across rocky hillsides. Continue to Giant’s Playground, a fascinating landscape of naturally balanced dolerite rock formations.

Later, stop at the Mesosaurus Fossil Site where fossils dating back over 270 million years provide insight into the ancient supercontinent of Gondwanaland.

The scenery changes dramatically throughout the journey — from flat Nama Karoo plains to rugged mountains and the lush irrigation fields around Naute Dam. Keep watch for wildlife such as springbok, oryx and giraffe along the route before arriving near Fish River Canyon for the evening.

At sunrise, the canyon’s ancient rock layers glow in shades of purple, gold and orange as the morning light reveals the immense scale of this geological masterpiece. Viewpoints along the rim provide spectacular panoramic scenery and excellent photography opportunities.

Wildlife adapted to this harsh desert environment includes Hartmann’s mountain zebra, springbok, oryx, klipspringer and chacma baboons, while birdlife may include Verreaux’s eagle and Pale Chanting Goshawk.

After lunch and relaxation at the lodge, enjoy a guided sundowner drive in the private Gondwana Canyon Park Reserve. One of today’s highlights is searching for the legendary Namib Desert wild horses near Aus. These free-roaming horses have survived generations in one of the harshest desert environments on earth. The late-afternoon light creates exceptional conditions for photography as the horses move across the gravel plains against a backdrop of dunes and mountains.

Continue through rugged desert scenery to the historic coastal town of Lüderitz, famous for German colonial architecture, Atlantic Ocean views and fresh seafood.

Guests may enjoy an evening stroll through town or sample local delicacies such as oysters, crayfish and fresh seafood specialties.

Continue to Diaz Point, where a replica cross commemorates the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias who reached this coastline in 1488. The rugged Atlantic coastline, seabirds and dramatic ocean scenery make this a rewarding stop.

Later, travel inland to Aus, located at the meeting point of three major ecological regions: the Succulent Karoo, Namib Desert and Nama Karoo. The changing scenery and peaceful desert atmosphere make this a perfect overnight stop before continuing north.
