Day 3

Serengeti

Serengeti

After breakfast, we continue with the game drive in Serengeti. The park has an area of 18,000 km² and for the most part, the plains stretch to the horizon, playing tricks on our senses and making faraway things appear much closer. The Serengeti is the site of a breathtaking spectacle; the world-famous great migration of the wildebeest. More than 2 million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of zebras, and all kinds of antelopes, including the abundant impala and Thomson’s gazelle, search for food following the rains. These large herds naturally attract predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. Many spectacular animal documentaries were filmed in this park. The Serengeti is also home to countless smaller, interesting animals such as mongooses, monkeys, baboons, jackals, foxes, honey badgers, stone hyrax, and African hares, as well as more than 500 species of birds.

Ngorongoro Crater to Karatu

After an early breakfast, you will descend over 600 meters into the crater to view wildlife. Supported by a year-round water supply and fodder, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephant. Another big draw card to this picturesque national park is its dense population of predators which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the ever-elusive leopards (which sometimes require a trained eye to spot). You will return to the campsite where you will enjoy lunch and later drive to Karatu for overnight.

Karatu to Lake Eyasi

After breakfast, you will traverse the rough road to Lake Eyasi, another soda lake in the Rift Valley. You will arrive in the afternoon for a cultural interaction with the Tatoga people (a very interesting community). Our Tatoga guide at the village will lead the tour. You will explore the dry and rugged landscape area on foot, which is still inhabited by a small group of Bushmen; the Hadzabe or Watindiga. These people still live in bands, hunting with bows and arrows and gather roots, tubers, and wild fruits, just as humans did to survive 10,000 years ago. Another interesting ethnicity in this area is the Datoga (also called the Barabaig or Mang’ati). Initially, they were exercising a lot of rivalry over grazing land with the Maasai.
