In the early morning, we will pick you up from your Nairobi hotel or the airport. We will then take a scenic route via the Central Highlands to Samburu on the semi-arid northern frontier of Kenya. After breakfast, we depart for Lake Nakuru National Park, arriving in time for lunch. This is followed by an afternoon game drive. We will have a brief stop en route at the imaginary Equator line that divides the planet into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes and is ideal for bird watching and wildlife viewing. It’s also a sanctuary for the black and white rhinos. The lake's abundance of blue-green algae used to attract a vast quantity of flamingos that famously lined the shore. However, due to increased flooding (around 2013) from the seasonal rivers and the permanent Baharini Springs, with no outflow/outlet, the lake received an alarming increase in water levels. This led to the migration of flamingos to nearby less congregated salty water lakes in search of food supply. The lake was declared a Ramsar Site in 1990 and 2009 as an important bird area.
