Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes and ideal for bird watching and wildlife viewing. It’s also a sanctuary to the black and white rhinos. The lake's abundance of blue-green algae used to attract a vast quantity of flamingos that famously lined the shore. However, as a result of increased flooding (around 2013), from the seasonal rivers and the permanent Baharini springs, with no outflow/outlet, the lake received an alarming increase in the water levels that led to the migration of flamingos to nearby less congregated salty water lakes in search for food supply.
The Lake was declared a Ramsar Site in 1990 and in 2009 as an Important Bird Area.
