Ngorongoro to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, depart for Tarangire National Park, arriving in time for lunch and an afternoon of game viewing.
Tarangire National Park lies 120km (75mi) south of Arusha and offers a wide variety of wildlife in an area of 2,850km² (1,100mi²). The Tarangire River, after which the park is named, provides the only permanent water for wildlife in the area. When the Maasai Steppe around the park dries up after the long rains in June, migratory animals return to the Tarangire River, making Tarangire National Park second only to Ngorongoro in terms of the concentration of wildlife. June to October is the best season for game viewing in Tarangire. The most common animals found in the park include zebras, wildebeest, lions, leopards, waterbuck, giraffes, elephants, gazelle, impala, gerenuk, lesser kudus, and the beautiful fringe-eared oryx. You may be lucky to spot the tree-climbing python or the greater kudu and roan antelope, a rare species in northern Tanzania.
