You will spot great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala, and Grant’s gazelle.
The word Serengeti stems from the Maasai language and literally means endless plains. The park offers a great view of the 400-meter-deep Great Rift Valley. This tear in the earth came into existence 22 to 25 million years ago, when movement in a weak area of the earth’s crust led to the formation of a rift thousands of kilometers long through the whole of East Africa. The valley is so enormous that it can be seen from outer space. It has many unique landscapes that attract a vast number of different animals.
