begin the 2,700-meter walk to Mandara Hut, your head guide here sets up the required
permissions and registration for rescue and search services. The trail takes you through rain
forest with its high probability of rain showers, so bring a raincoat.

fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo and the wide plain of the Masai steppe.

Distance: 9km/5.5mi

The grassy moorland will give way as you start your climb. Entering the Alpine Desert Zone, a
dark wind environment with little vegetation and expansive views of the volcanic mountains,
makes the path drier and more desolate.
You will pass the Last Water Point in the first two hours. This location represents a psychological
turning point on the journey and is the last place to gather natural water before the peak. Since
there is no running water further this point, porters will gather water here to use at Kibo Hut. The
trail then continues across the saddle, a broad area of open terrain that lies between Kibo (5,895
m) directly in front of you and Mawenzi Peak (5,149 m) to your right. This area is complicated,
open, frequently windy, and has strong UV radiation.
