Karatu - Ngorongoro Crater
Karatu - Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area stretches from Serengeti National Park in the north to the Great Rift Valley in the east. Covering more than 8,000 km² (3,200 sq. miles), it includes Ngorongoro Crater, Ndutu, Olduvai Gorge, Empakaai, Olmoti Crater, and Oldonyo Lengai Mountain. This diverse landscape of forests, valleys, savannahs, craters, lakes, and swamps supports a wide range of wildlife.
The main feature of the area is the famous Ngorongoro Crater, formed two to three million years ago when a large volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself, creating a unique ecosystem with varied vegetation. The crater is home to zebras, buffaloes, warthogs, baboons, elephants, flamingos, ostriches, and hippos. It also supports a high population of predators, including lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and leopards. One of the main attractions is the presence of the “Big Five:” buffaloes, elephants, leopards, lions, and rhinos.
Later, you’ll drive back to Arusha.
