Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Arusha to the Marangu Gate, where your trek on Mount Kilimanjaro begins. The journey starts with an 8-kilometer hike through the lush Montane forest, taking approximately 3 hours. As you ascend from the Marangu Gate at 1,800 meters (5,906 feet) to Mandara Hut at 2,700 meters (8,858 feet), you’ll experience the beauty of the forest, home to diverse flora and fauna, including unique bird species and tropical plants. The cool mountain air and stunning vistas make this a rewarding hike. Upon reaching Mandara Hut, relax and enjoy a hearty meal while soaking in the serene surroundings.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Your journey continues as you depart from Mandara Hut and begin the hike towards Horombo Hut, located at 3,800 meters (12,467 feet) on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. This 11-kilometer trek, taking approximately 5 to 7 hours, takes you through a variety of landscapes, transitioning from lush rainforest to the rugged moorland. As you ascend, the air grows thinner, and the surroundings become more dramatic. Upon reaching Horombo Hut, take a moment to appreciate the stunning views before settling in for the night. Enjoy a warm meal and relax, reflecting on the day's adventure while soaking in the serene atmosphere of Kilimanjaro.

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

On Day 3, you’ll embark on a 9-kilometer trek from Horombo Hut to Kibo Base Camp, located at 4,700 meters (15,419 feet). The journey takes you through a stunning landscape, transitioning from moorland to an alpine desert. As you ascend, the terrain becomes more rugged, and the air thinner, providing a true sense of high-altitude adventure. Upon reaching Kibo Base Camp, you’ll have time to rest and prepare for the final push to the summit.

Summit Attempt (Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak) & Descend to Horombo Hut

Your summit attempt will begin at 12:00 AM, departing from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The challenging ascent takes you through rugged terrain and high altitudes, but the reward of reaching the summit at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) is truly unforgettable. After celebrating your accomplishment, you will descend to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest and overnight stay.

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

You will begin your descent from Horombo Hut back to Marangu Gate. This 20-kilometer journey takes you through scenic moorland and lush rainforest, offering a final opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will complete the necessary exit formalities. From there, you will be transferred to your accommodation in Moshi or Arusha, or directly to the airport, marking the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
