Your guide and mountain crew will meet you at the hotel for a short briefing before heading to Londorossi Gate (2,250 m) — a 3–4 hour drive. After permits and registration, the trek to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m) begins through the rainforest, so bring a raincoat. Lunch awaits at camp, followed by a short acclimatization hike toward Shira 1 with a 300 m gain. These hikes are key to a safe and successful climb.

Day 2
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

You'll start the day with a hearty breakfast before heading out on a 5–6 hour trek to Shira 1 Camp (3,610 m / 11,841 ft). Along the way, you'll climb to 3,500 m, where wide views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Volcano come into sight. The trail is manageable, helping your body ease into the altitude. Once at camp, enjoy a freshly prepared lunch, then relax in your tent or explore the surroundings at your own pace.

Day 3
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Today’s trek from Shira 1 Camp (3,610m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) offers incredible views of Kilimanjaro’s high plateau, unique alpine flora, and, if skies are clear, Mount Meru. Along the way, our guides may suggest a scenic detour to Cathedral Peak (3,872m)—a rewarding hike with striking valley views. The ascent is optional but adds a special moment to your journey with no impact on acclimatization.

Day 4
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Moir Hut
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Moir Hut
We continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower – a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. Then we divert from the main trail to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira Plateau is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

Day 5
Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
We trek out of Moir Valley with a moderately steep climb, then hike to the summit of Lent Hills before returning to the main trail. The path crosses a rock field and gently undulates before reaching Buffalo Camp. This section of the trail offers great views across the plains that lie north of Kilimanjaro and stretch out to the Kenyan/Tanzanian border.

Day 6
Buffalo Camp to Third Cave

As we head up Buffalo Ridge, the terrain becomes increasingly sparse. This route is rarely travelled and we will enjoy its mountain wilderness feel. We trek through remote valleys on to the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro until we arrive at Third Cave.

Day 7

Today we climb steadily over the Saddle, the broad ridge connecting Kibo and Mawenzi. The landscape becomes more rugged and dramatic as we ascend. We then reach School Hut Camp, where we rest and have an early dinner in preparation for the upcoming summit attempt tonight.

Day 8

Around midnight, we begin the final and toughest part of the climb. The cold and wind are intense as we move slowly in the dark, taking brief breaks. At Gilman’s Point (18,600 ft), a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak greets us. We then reach Uhuru Peak—the roof of Africa. After celebrating, we descend to Mweka Camp via Barafu for lunch. The rocky trail challenges tired knees. That night, we enjoy our last mountain dinner and deep rest.

Day 9

On our final day, we continue the descent to Mweka Gate, where the trail becomes wetter and muddier at lower elevations. Once we reach the gate, a vehicle transports us back to our hotel in Moshi. There, we are awarded our well-earned summit certificates, marking the end of this unforgettable journey.
