Over a million wildebeest, driven by an ancient instinct, participate in a dramatic 3-week period of territorial battles, mating, and survival of the fittest. They then begin their epic 1,000 km (600 miles) journey north, moving in long columns up to 40 km (25 miles) long, crossing crocodile-infested rivers in a remarkable display of endurance. This annual migration also results in a brief population surge, with more than 8,000 calves born daily, continuing the cycle of life.
