Once the necessary paperwork is completed, you’ll start your hike, immersing yourself in the lush rainforest. On your way to Mandara Hut, keep an eye out for primates and vibrant plant life. After a refreshing break, your guide will take you to the Maundi Crater, where you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Kenyan interior.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
The hike to Horombo Hut takes approximately 4 to 6 hours, allowing time to take in the scenery, acclimatize gradually, and spot occasional wildlife such as sunbirds or even a distant duiker. As you climb higher, the air becomes crisper, and the sweeping views become even more breathtaking.
At an altitude of 3,700 meters, Horombo Hut offers a spectacular resting point. From here, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Mawenzi’s jagged peaks, the snow-capped summit of Kibo, and the vast Masai steppe stretching far into the distance. This is a perfect spot to relax, reflect on the day’s progress, and prepare for the days ahead on your journey to the Roof of Africa.

From Horombo Hut (3700m) to Kibo Hut (4700m)
The stage for today’s trek is long and challenging. The well-maintained trail will take you past the “Last Water Point” and then the “saddle,” a plateau with minimal vegetation that links the main summit, Kibo, to Mawenzi. Today’s goal is to reach the Kibo Hut, which typically takes around 5 to 6 hours to reach. Once there, you’ll enjoy an early dinner and head to bed early as the night will be brief.
