Upon arrival in Kigali, your driver-guide will pick you up and take you on a scenic drive through Rwanda’s lush countryside toward Musanze, the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park. Along the way, you can choose to stop for a Kigali city tour, including the Genocide Memorial, or visit local craft markets. Arrive at your lodge near the park in the afternoon and relax as you prepare for the gorilla trekking adventure.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Wake up early for breakfast, then drive to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi. Here, you will receive a briefing at 7:00 AM from park officials and expert rangers. You will be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families, with no more than eight trekkers per group. By 8:30 AM, you’ll begin your trek into the forest, led by experienced guides and armed rangers.
The trek takes between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the movement of the gorilla family you are tracking. The trail winds through dense bamboo forest, lush vegetation, and volcanic slopes, offering an immersive experience in nature. Once you find the gorillas, you will have exactly one hour to observe them from a safe distance watching the silverback, playful juveniles, and nurturing mothers as they feed, interact, and move about in their natural habitat. This is an intimate, emotional encounter that leaves lasting memories. After your hour is up, you will meet your driver and transfer you to your lodge.

Drive to Kigali and Departure

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before checking out of your lodge. Begin the drive back to Kigali, soaking in the scenic countryside one last time. Depending on your flight schedule, you can choose to do an optional Kigali city tour, visit local coffee shops, or enjoy a final shopping stop before being dropped off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport for your departure.
