Day 2
Arusha to Lendorosi to Shira 1 Camp
Arusha to Lendorosi to Shira 1 Camp
Depart Arusha early and drive to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side for registration and permits. Continue by 4WD vehicle along a rough track to the Shira trailhead, where your trek begins. The hike today is relatively short but starts at higher altitude, so pace yourself carefully. Walk across the Shira Plateau, an expansive volcanic landscape with low vegetation and wide-open views. The terrain is gentle with slight ascents, allowing your body to begin adjusting. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon, where you will settle in, enjoy dinner, and receive a briefing from your guides about the days ahead.
Day 3
Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
After breakfast, continue trekking east across the Shira Plateau. The trail is gradual, offering spectacular panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding high-altitude desert. You may take a detour toward Shira Cathedral, a striking volcanic formation, for acclimatization. The hike is not too strenuous, but the altitude begins to be felt, so a slow and steady pace is essential. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp by early afternoon. After lunch, you can take a short acclimatization walk to a higher elevation before returning to camp. This day is key for adapting to the thinner air while enjoying one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic regions.

Day 4
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Today is crucial for acclimatization. Trek toward Lava Tower, gaining significant altitude as you move into alpine desert terrain. The trail is rocky and more challenging, with noticeable altitude effects. After reaching Lava Tower for lunch, descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust effectively. Barranco Camp sits below the imposing Barranco Wall, surrounded by giant senecios and dramatic cliffs. The descent makes this day feel less strenuous overall, despite the altitude gain. Rest well and hydrate as you prepare for the next day’s climb.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Start the day by tackling the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that requires some scrambling. Once at the top, you are rewarded with incredible views of the glaciers and valleys below. Continue along ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp, crossing streams and rocky terrain. The hike is relatively short but involves several ascents and descents, making it moderately challenging. Arrive at camp by midday, allowing time to rest and acclimatize further. This day plays an important role in preparing your body for higher elevations ahead.

Day 6
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Leave Karanga and ascend steadily toward Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. The trail is steep and rocky, passing through barren alpine desert with little vegetation. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes harsher and more exposed. Arrive at Barafu Camp in the early afternoon and rest. After an early dinner, your guides will brief you on the summit attempt. Spend the evening preparing gear and trying to sleep, as you will wake around midnight to begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Day 7
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Begin your summit attempt just after midnight, climbing slowly in cold, dark conditions. Reach Stella Point at sunrise, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp. This is the most physically demanding day, involving long hours of hiking and significant altitude changes. Upon arrival at Mweka Camp, enjoy dinner and a well-earned rest after your summit success.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Arusha
Descend through the rainforest zone, where the air becomes warmer and oxygen-rich. The trail can be muddy and slippery, so trekking poles are helpful. Enjoy the lush scenery, birdlife, and dense vegetation as you make your way to Mweka Gate. After completing park formalities and receiving your summit certificate, meet your driver and return to Arusha. Celebrate your achievement and relax at your hotel or prepare for onward travel, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
