Morning Game Drive in Mikumi & Transfer to Nyerere National Park

Start your day with an early morning game drive in Mikumi National Park, when the wildlife is most active and the soft morning light creates perfect photography conditions. Explore the Mkata floodplain, where you may encounter elephants, wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, and possibly lions or leopards on the hunt. The open savannah and backdrop of the Uluguru Mountains create a scenic safari experience.

After returning to your lodge for breakfast and check-out, begin your road transfer to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), a journey of approximately 5–6 hours. Along the way, enjoy glimpses of rural Tanzanian life as you pass through small villages, farmlands, and forested areas.

Arrive in Nyerere National Park in the late afternoon and check into your lodge or tented camp, ideally located near the Rufiji River. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a short evening game drive or simply relax as the sun sets over the bush.

Full-Day Safari in Nyerere National Park

After an early breakfast, set off for a full day of exploration in the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park, one of Africa’s largest protected areas and home to an incredible variety of ecosystems. Your morning game drive will take you through a mix of open grasslands, woodlands, and riverine forests, where you may spot elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, lions, and the elusive African wild dog.

Break for a picnic lunch in a scenic spot within the park, enjoying the sounds of nature and breathtaking views.

In the afternoon, embark on a boat safari along the Rufiji River—a signature experience in Nyerere. Glide past pods of hippos, sunbathing crocodiles, and spot a wide array of birdlife, including kingfishers, African fish eagles, and herons. The riverbanks are often frequented by elephants and other wildlife coming to drink, offering excellent photographic opportunities.

Return to your lodge in the early evening for dinner and time to relax under the stars.

After breakfast, check out from your lodge and begin your road transfer back to Dar es Salaam (approx. 6–7 hours). Enjoy scenic views of Tanzania’s rural countryside, villages, and natural landscapes along the way. Arrive in the city by late afternoon or early evening, marking the end of your unforgettable Southern Tanzania safari adventure.
