Arusha to Lake Natron

After an early breakfast, you will be met by your Maasailand Adventure crew and guide at Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha for a briefing, followed by a journey through the dramatic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley through Lake Natron. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking scenery, remote Maasai villages, volcanic landscapes and views of the surrounding highlands.

Upon arrival at Lake Natron, you will settle into your accommodation and have time to relax while taking in the peaceful surroundings beneath Ol Doinyo Lengai, Tanzania’s only active volcano.

Later in the day, you may explore the area, enjoy the stunning scenery around the lake and prepare for your trek, starting at around midnight. Dinner and an early rest will be enjoyed at your campsite near Lake Natron.

Climb Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai

Very early in the morning (around midnight), you will begin your challenging ascent of Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the “Mountian of God” and the only active carbonatite volcano in the world. The climb is steep and demanding, but rewarding, as you make your way up under the stars with guidance from your experienced local guide.

Reaching the summit in time for sunrise, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the Great Rift Valley, surrounding volcanic landscapes and possible views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru (weather depending). After spending time at the crater rim, you will descend back to base.

The rest of the day is for rest and recovery at the campsite near Lake Natron, where you can relax, enjoy meals and reflect on your incredible achievement.

If you are interested, a Maasai Boma visit can be arranged in the evening for a local culture experience.

Flamingo Walking Tour then return to Arusha

After a relaxed breakfast, you will enjoy a guided flamingo walk tour around Lake Natron, one of East Africa’s most important breeding grounds for lesser flamingos. Walk along the shoreline with your guide as you observe thousands of flamingos feeding in the shallow soda waters, along with other bird species and striking volcanic scenery. You will also learn about the unique ecosystem of the lake, shaped by alkaline waters and the surrounding Rift Valley landscape beneath Ol Doinyo Lengai.

You will then continue to Engaresero waterfall, where you can take a short scenic walk through the gorge and enjoy the refreshing natural pools surrounded by dramatic Rift Valley landscapes beneath Ol Doinyo Lengai.

After the experience, you will begin your journey back to Arusha, travelling through scenic landscapes and Maasai villages along the way. Upon arrival, you will be transferred back to Mount Meru hotel, bringing your incredible adventure to a memorable close.
