Mlawula Nature Reserve, in northeastern Eswatini, is remote and wonderfully peaceful. There isn’t much of a game drive circuit, but the reserve’s trail network is its greatest asset. The Khabane Trail stands out as a highlight. Winding steadily up the rugged slopes above the valley, a new path leads to a dramatic cave perched high on the mountainside. The endless views from the cave – layer upon layer of blue ridges fading into the distance – make the climb feel instantly worthwhile.

You’re unlikely to see any predators here, but nyala, wildebeest and impala are quite common. Keep an eye on the ground too: leopard tortoises frequently amble along the road, especially after rain. Birdlife is excellent, with a mix of lowveld and montane species – hornbills, sunbirds, rollers and raptors are commonly seen – and early mornings are particularly rewarding for birders.

Despite its remote feel, Mlawula offers comfortable accommodation at Magadzavane Lodge.
