I am Kenyan born, i currently live in Kenya and i believe Lake Nakuru is truly one of Kenya's crown jewels. It is home to 4 out of the big 5 (rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalos) as well as a number of other herbivores including impala's, gazelles, antelope, bushbuck, zebra, giraffe and many smaller carnivores including hyenas. The birdlife is brilliant too as it is a prime site to view thousands of flamingoes on the lake shore.
The scenery is great too, you can get amazing photographs of the lake surrounded by windblown acacia trees, especially on a rainy day.
The park is not very large, hence the wildlife are quite condensed enabling one to spot many animals on a single game drive. I recommend going for an early morning (6.30am- 9.30am) and an evening drive ( 3pm-6pm).

There are several luxurious hotels both within the park and outside the park, namely Sarova Lion Hill and Sopa lodge Lake Nakuru, as well as secure public campsites managed by the Kenya

Access to the park is by a well maintained tarmac highway (A104) from Nairobi to Nakuru town. Inside the park 4x4 vehicles are necessary especially in the rainy months (April, July, August) although the rain can be unpredictable as well. I recommend hiring a 4x4 safari vehicle/ safari van with a driver as the park roads can be confusing for newcomers. Van drivers also have communication via radio with other safari vehicles.

Park entry fees and further information can be obtained from the Kenya Wildlife Service website:

The only leopard I have ever seen was in this park. Diversity of wildlife and habitat. Flamingos and rhino numbers were sufficient.

The only thing that shocked me about the area is how filthy with garbage (plastic especially) just outside the park entrance. I cannot believe the people just throw this on the ground- and near a National Park. Absolutely astounding to see that locals abuse their own gorgeous country. That stuck in my mind forever- in a park in Canada it would be difficult to find even one scrap of garbage anywhere- I will never take this for granted again.

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of my favourite parks in Kenya. It offers so much variation on so little space.
One of the remarkable things with this park is the flamingos. The shore of the lake is often completly pink with tens of thounsands flamingos. When you get up in the highlands and look down on the shore, you see how numerous they are. Incredible!

I also like the variations in the landscapes of the park. From deep forest to the big lake, and also savannah.

Perfect park. HIGHLY reccomended

We visited Lake Nakuru to see some Rhino's, and boy! were we surprised, within 1/2 hour inside the park, we saw 7 Black Rhino's and 2 very large White Rhino's. it was a blast! 10 of us went from Edmonton Canada in 2 jeeps provided by Odyssey Safari's in NY. The best part was a young wounded Black Rhino charging our Jeep! OMG!! Stuff that movies are made of. You can view the video, go to youtube and type in 12511131 in the search bar and make sure you turn the volume up. Absolutely awesome. And the Flamingo's!! OMG! Sea of red and pink.

Contrary to the other destinations in Kenya, Lake Nakuru allows you to see flamingos, hippos, and lots of monkeys and baboons. It is a great addition to a safari because of its vast wetlands and lake, which is different than much of the typical bush scene you get in other parts of Kenya. We stayed at the Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, which was great! View my video of Lake Nakuru at http://youtu.be/BXETOPnwEhQ?t=2m21s
