Nsumbu is a fine birding destination, with several East African species at the edge of their range. Visiting lesser-known parks, where flagship mammal species aren’t easily seen, is often ideal for birding. The variety of habitats – including lakeshore, rivers, wetland and cliffs – is home to a good range of birds. Pel’s fishing-owl and palm-nut vulture are some of the specials to look out for.

Best Time for Bird Watching

Nsumbu is a great birding destination throughout the year. However, the ideal time for bird watching is in the wet months – from November to April. Migrant birds arrive from the north, and many species are in breeding plumage during these months.
