Nsumbu National Park incorporates 100km/60mi of Lake Tanganyika’s beautiful shoreline. Although it is not a prime wildlife-viewing destination, there are lots of good reasons to visit this off-the-beaten-track park. Two lakeside lodges offer a range of activities including fishing, boat trips and walking safaris. And who wouldn’t want to chill out for a couple of days on a hideaway beach fringing the crystal clear waters of Africa’s oldest, longest and most voluminous lake.
Pros & Cons
Wildlife
Nsumbu is not a prime wildlife-viewing destination, but animal populations are on the increase. The lake is home to good numbers of hippos and crocodiles. Elephants and buffalo often come to the shore to drink, and a variety of antelope species, including roan and sable, can be seen on game drives. Lions and hyenas are shy but can be heard (and sometimes seen) at night.
Scenery
The park includes a small part of Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa’s most scenic Rift Valley lakes. Sandy beaches, rocky coves and natural bays follow the park’s long shoreline. Inland are grassy hills interrupted by the picturesque Lufubu River in a valley flanked by escarpments on either side.
Weather & Climate
Temperatures in Nsumbu stay relatively stable throughout the year because of the park’s tropical location. Nsumbu experiences a warm Dry season from May to October (but nights can be chilly). The arrival of rain in late October or November marks the start of the area’s Wet season (November to April), which is filled with hot days but pleasant nights.
Best Time To Visit
Nsumbu receives few visitors, so it never feels crowded. The middle and end of the Dry season, from July to October, is the prime time for wildlife viewing. As water dries up in the bush, animals tend to stick close to the lake. Furthermore, the thinning bush makes it easier to spot them.
