Leopards and Pangolin

Neither a park nor a safari destination, Okonjima is nevertheless a worthwhile complement to an Etosha National Park safari because of the opportunities it offers to observe (mostly collared) leopards at close range and to learn about local conservation measures and the various approaches being taken to address longstanding issues of human–leopard conflict in the surrounding farmlands. There also are not many other places where road signs warn you to be aware of pangolin! Visitors have a decent chance of spotting one of these elusive creatures; AfriCat, which is based at the reserve, has an ongoing pangolin research project. In addition to leopards and pangolin, you may see Chacma baboons (Okonjima means ‘place of the baboons’ in the local Herero language) and smaller wildlife such as the Damara dik-dik, springbok and an array of hornbills and other birds. It’s a relaxing spot, especially if you choose to spend the night, with opportunities for hiking and wide views over the surrounding
Read more plains. It generally works better to visit Okonjima en route to Etosha (rather than afterwards) to gain background knowledge for the much more expansive wildlife scene in the national park.
