Blue Eyes in the Bush: A Pumba Adventure

Pumba Private Game Reserve is a great choice for a safari in the Eastern Cape. For the level of accommodation provided, Pumba delivers remarkable value. The suites are stylish and spacious, with private plunge pools, large decks overlooking rugged hills or a tranquil waterhole, and elegant interiors that strike a balance between modern design and African warmth. After game drives, returning to such comfort – complete with superb meals and attentive service – feels wonderfully indulgent.

During my stay, wildlife viewing at Pumba was consistently rewarding. While leopards are as elusive here as they are across most of the Eastern Cape, the other four members of the Big Five are commonly seen, often at close range. Our sightings of white rhinos were particularly memorable. One large bull even created an unusual obstacle when he decided the middle of the road was the perfect place for an afternoon nap. Pumba’s most distinctive feature is its population of white lions. These are not albinos but a naturally occurring colour variation caused by a recessive gene that lightens the coat to shades ranging from pale blonde to almost snow white. Pumba has an entire pride displaying varying degrees of this colouring, and their interactions created some great photo opportunities. The cubs, with their pale fur and striking blue eyes, were especially enchanting.

Yet the highlight of my stay was something altogether rarer: a young caracal. These small, elusive cats are notoriously difficult to see in the wild, and catching even a brief glimpse feels like winning a safari lottery.
