Great all around experience, great views, amazing food, fun times!
5/5

Chris was an amazing guide and we were really lucky to get to spend 4 days with him in Kruger National Park. He was very knowledgeable with regard to the wildlife and he knew a lot about the plant-life as well. Perhaps one of the coolest parts was his knowledge of astronomy. Sleeping out under the stars and looking up at the Southern Cross was magical. We saw almost everything we were hoping to see. The food was probably the best surprise. Chris is an amazing cook!

Our Safari with Armadillo Overland Safaris was far above my wildest expectations!
5/5

Everything about our safari was perfect. When Chris picked us up in Johannesburg in "Truck Norris", we weren't sure what we were in for. It soon became apparent that Chris had designed and built a very comfortable and unique Safari vehicle. Once we arrived in Kruger Park the amazing features of the truck really stood out. We were able to move around to different seats and viewing positions in order to see and photograph the animals we began to see. (Becasuse Truck Norris is such a tall vehicle, we were able to see over other vehicles and we had a much better chance of finding animals in the distance!) Chris is an excellent and very well informed guide and he took us to areas where we were able to see hundreds of wild animals We saw all of the big five including dozens of lions, and elephants. Chris even woke us up to witness 3 lions taking down a buffalo, just outside our camping compound ar 1am. Speaking of Camping, we were very comfortably housed in tents and incredibly well fed over the 5 days Even the weather was great. If I ever get a chance to go back to South Africa for another safari, I would definitely choose Armadillo Overland Safaris. It was one of tghe best weeks of my life!

A once in a lifetime experience done the best possible way.
5/5

Going on safari has been a lifelong dream of mine. Right from the moment I sent an enquiry through to Chris, to the moment he dropped me back at the airport after the safari, I felt safe, well looked after and well informed about every aspect of the safari, which meant I was free to sit back, relax and enjoy everything that Kruger had to offer.

Before you go on safari, people warn you that you shouldn't expect to see something every day and that, when you do, it might be an elephant far in the distance or a buffalo herd on the horizon. I tried to manage my expectations as best I could. When I saw Chris's Armadillo truck, I started to get really excited. The extra height meant that our feet were at the level of most cars' roofs. This means you can see further, and also you can drive up to any sights people are viewing at the roadside without being blocked by a car in front.

It is hard to describe the wonder and the experience of a safari adequately, and we were exceptionally lucky on ours, but here is a quick list of what we saw, close up (touching distance, were it not for Kruger's rules and personal safety concerns): 5 different groups of lion at the roadside, including one pride of 18 lions, one of which was Kruger's only resident white lion; innumerable elephants, some crossing the road; a crash of rhinos crossing the road in front of our truck; herds of buffalo; a leopard sitting in the branch of a tree at the roadside; zebras; giraffes; kudus; beautiful birds and plant life... You get to watch how the animals actually behave, in the real world, and Chris gives you time, space and information to enhance this. Perhaps the best part of the safari was when we were woken in our tents at Satara by the sounds of heavy breathing and growling. These were the sounds of a buffalo being taken down by a coalition of 3 male lions right outside the perimeter fence. We were able to watch it all, as well as check in on the cycle of life and scavenging that played out afterwards between the hyenas, the jackals and the vultures.

Apart from the experience itself, there is NO OTHER vehicle like Chris's doing safaris. It has better height than the others by a good couple of feet. It also has tables, comfortable seating, a flush toilet, a library of reference books and even an honesty bar on board to you can kick back with a cold beer or cider whilst watching the natural world play out in front of you. Chris is a generous and excellent cook, the food was superb. The tented accommodation is also very comfortable.

I am the sort of person who will always find reason to moan about something, but I literally cannot think of a single thing to complain about on this trip. It was flawless, one of the best experiences of my life, and I envy you the anticipation of not having done it yet.

The Highlight Of Our South Africa Trip
5/5

We spent five days in Kruger with Chris and Nicky of Armadillo-Overland-Tours, and it was a once in a lifetime experience. I am NOT a camper, but I've never eaten or slept so well in my life. Coffee, rusks, and granola at dawn, then out for a game drive, followed by an exceptional brunch and more animal spotting. My partner claims we saw 100 species in five days -- I know I counted 76!

After setting up camp, evenings were spent eating (and I like to eat), drinking, and making new friends. Every camp site had showers and toilets, so it never felt like "roughing it." The tour vehicle, designed and built by the owner, put us head and shoulders above those in cars and jeeps -- a definite advantage for photographers!

If you ever wind up in South Africa, you owe it to yourself to visit Kruger for at least a few days. Chris and Nicky (the owner-operators) do some posh tours, but if you're on a budget or just want something different, camping with the pros is the way to go.

So accommodating to everyone’s needs and you could have a laugh with him also very knowledgeable
5/5

The tour good was so lovely, very accommodating, chatty and knowledgeable. The tour itself was very interesting and it was cool to see all the animals. Loved truck Norris , we had 3 meals a day and drinks prepared for us and had a freezer and fridge on the truck so we could store our own stuff. Also had blankets pillows and chargers. So comfortable! Really good value for money as Morris had all the camping essentials so we didn’t have to buy any extras. Time and money really well spent would really recommend, once in a lifetime.

Simply the best!
5/5

I’ve wanted to do a Safari with Armadillo since before Covid. Everything I read about them I loved.
Different from other bigger operators, their approach is very personal and custom to each client.

Richard was very responsive and helpful in answering all of my questions as to help me select the best experience for my husband and myself.

When the day finally arrived, Richard and Morris picked us up in Johannesburg in their unique custom truck and the next 4 days were just fantastic!

We chose the camping option. As we planned several months in advance, Richard was able to reserve our spots in 2 camps, but we mainly stayed in Skukuza.

Every day, Richard and Morris planned our drives to look for animals, they were very generous with their time and we spent as much time on drives as we wanted.

The truck is great because it’s high up so we could see over the other cars and jeeps. It also has windows which can be closed/open so it’s much cozier in early mornings as you’re protected from the wind.

Richard and Morris are both very knowledgeable and were giving us very interesting information on animals and their behavior.

Finally, I must mention Richard’s cooking. Two words - Top Notch!

We highly recommend you choose Armadillo Overland Tours for an unforgettable experience!

A real Bush experience come to life
5/5

Armadillo Safaris offered my nephew and I the most amazing experience. We took a 4 day/3 night package where everything was organized perfectly and one that was personalized and most importantly, safe. In fact, we were treated to an additional night, without cost, as there were to be some protests on one of the highways we would be taking to Kruger National Park from Johannesburg airport ; and Richard wanted to ensure we would be in the park before any demonstrations began. This was a true sign of a professional organization.

We also enjoyed the many stories , historical facts and experiences that our guides, Richard and Morris, shared with us relating to the Park, the animals and indeed the people of South Africa and their bond with the animals and the land itself.

Seeing these majestic creatures and in such close proximity, brings one closer to nature and to the vast beauty that is Africa. We were also privileged to be in a “one of a kind” safari vehicle which was specifically designed. It was higher than any other vehicle, so our range of vision was further and others were very jealous. Snacks, water and other assorted beverages were always at hand for our convenience. Morris also doubled as our driver. He could manage narrow roads with unbelievable agility, and had the keenest eye for spotting animals such as lions and leopards, who might be relaxing under a tree or lounging up a tree.

Our accommodations offered the type of huts we requested with air conditioning ( it was 35 degrees Celsius during the day in mid-March), while evenings were spent outdoors enjoying the culinary delights of Chef Richard on an open fire and sharing wonderful wines from the region. Seeing the stars which seemed closer than usual, was certainly a great delight.

Our return to the airport included visits to the Moloholo Refuge, a wonderful place where wounded animals/birds are rehabilitated; and visiting amazing geological wonders such as The Rondavels and The Potholes.

We wish to thank Richard and Morris for a truly wonderful and unique experience that will stay with us forever. We would recommend Richard and Morris to anyone interested in the real bush experience. Simply terrific!!!

Personalised Safaris with great knowledge about nature, animals, geography, history and food
5/5

I went on a 4-day camping trip with Richard and Alistair from Armadillo. We did 3 days in Kruger and 1 day back to Johannesburg via the panorama route.
It was an amazing experience! We were able to find all of the big five, including the White Rhino, which is very challenging to find in Kruger these days.
Furthermore, I was also interested in all the birds in Kruger and all the other mammals. In the end, we were able to identify 150+ animals! Including amazing birds of prey, owls, 6 different king fishers, a Gecko, the Honey Badger and so on. In Kruger I also did a sunset drive and a bush walk, which I both recommend as they give you a different view of the park and you are able to spot animals that are hard to find during the day or from the car.
Alistair always had information ready about the animals or the other aspects of the nature in Kruger like the different biomes. He also knew all the animals and their sounds and was able to identify them in seconds.
The camping experience was great too! Richard always put a lot of effort in to the food. He is a former chef and you can tell from all the food he prepared. I’ve never had such great meals on any other tour.
Overall, I would certainly recommend booking a tour with these guys. Just because they go all the way to make it the way you want and go even further by checking in with you everyday and delivering a very personalised experience! Just ask for a quote and you won’t regret it!

Absolutely fantastic safari. Brilliant guides, tasty food and amazing Big 5 game-viewing!
5/5

I was thoroughly impressed by Armadillo Overland Safaris. Right from the beginning, they responded to our enquiry timeously and planned our trip to our specifications. Everything ran smoothly and without any hitches. 'Truck Norris' was a very impressive vehicle and allowed us to see some incredible Big 5 sightings, as the vehicle is much higher than normal safari vehicles. The food was wholesome and delicious and many laughs were had around the campfire at night. The guides were knowledgeable, extremely friendly, and managed to spot the entire Big 5 as well as a rare sighting of Wild Dog!
I would thoroughly recommend using this tour company, they completely exceeded our expectations.
