Great from start to finish...
Wow where do I start… what an incredible few days with EPIC and Jerome. For context I am a mid-30s male from London, travelling solo, and it is not my first time in Africa.
Firstly, due to issues with flight cancellations I want to thank Jerome (my guide for the trip) for being so accommodating with last minute changes to my arrival time. He met me at arrivals and was happy to let me spend some time speaking with Rwandair staff to resolve a query. Once we got on the road towards Bwindi he was clearly very well informed about Rwanda and his native Uganda. I learned a lot in those 5/6 hours as we crossed the border and settled in for the night.
The next day was Gorilla Habituation day, and luckily for me, with it being the low season I was the only tourist on the expedition (along with 3 trackers, 2 scouts armed with rifles, 1 guide and 1 porter). We only had to hike for 1hr20min before finding a family of 9 gorillas, and words cannot come close to describing the experience. You simply cannot gauge the true size of these beautiful creatures, or understand the thrill when they move past you seeking out more vines. The habituation experience offers 4 hours with the gorillas but eventually I spent only 3 hours - which I’m glad for because on the hike back I managed to spot the endemic 3 horned chameleon crossing our path. We spent the remainder of the day crossing the border back to Rwanda and spent a relaxing evening near Volcano National Park.
Another early start gave us the opportunity to see the Golden Monkeys in VNP. Sadly, any experience after the gorillas is going to be mildly underwhelming but these unique critters were still a sight to behold. This activity was over in 1 hour and perhaps would be good to combine with another excursion with most of the day remaining. In the end I changed my flights to begin my next adventure in Kenya that evening.
Overall the experience with Jerome was incredible. He made me feel very relaxed and at home in a new country, with his humour and knowledge of the area. His English was perfect, as well as all of the other languages he spoke which were especially useful on the odd occasion. The 4x4 car we had was very comfortable and managed well with the road conditions at high altitude. I would highly recommend Jerome / EPIC / this tour (which can be customised) to anyone!
