Expert Reviews – Thornybush GR

Great first-time safari destination.
Overall rating

Thornybush is part of the cluster of Association of Private Reserves, bordering Kruger National Park. It has recently taken its internal fences down, to much applause, so that the reserve is now freely open to greater Kruger.

Thornybush is a classic Big 5 destination. Great wildlife sightings although the bush is quite thick. There are a variety of up market lodges, all part of the Thornybush Collection. They vary in price according to levels of luxury – the wildlife sightings are pretty much the same, whichever lodge you choose to stay at. I stayed here with UK friends on their first ever safari. After ticking off the Big 5, my guests were desperate to still see cheetah. Somehow our guide managed to deliver two male cheetah in the last hour of our last game drive – oh, and a caracal too!
