Chobe Day Trips From Victoria Falls - Compare 43 Tours

4.5/5  –  233 Chobe Reviews

Chobe National Park is a world-class safari destination, and it’s made even better by the possibility of combining it with time spent at Victoria Falls. The two are close enough to each other that you can leave Victoria Falls early in the morning, spend most of the day in and around Chobe, and then return to Victoria Falls come nightfall. Clearly, if you can manage to stay overnight in (or close to) Chobe, it will make your visit even better. But lots of tour operators offer day trips of this kind and they’re a wonderful experience even without the extra day.

5 Questions About Chobe Day Trips From Victoria Falls

5 Questions About Chobe Day Trips From Victoria Falls

Answered by Anthony Ham

Is it possible to go on a day trip to Chobe NP from Victoria Falls?

“Yes, a day trip from Victoria Falls to Chobe NP is not only possible but is also one of the most popular excursions in the area. This means that there are many different operators offering a range of packages to choose from. Most of these packages offer day trips by road (usually in a minibus or 4WD vehicle, or a combination of the two), but flying is also possible. Take your time to check a number of different operators to find one that suits your budget and maximizes the amount of time you spend in Chobe looking for animals.”

1

What can I see in Chobe on a day trip?

“Chobe NP is one of southern Africa’s largest parks, but fortunately the incredible Chobe Riverfront section is just across Botswana’s border with Zimbabwe or Zambia, and it’s one of the best areas in the park for wildlife. The narrow shoreline is where most of the park’s animals come down to the Chobe River to drink. This is especially true of elephants, which are a real Chobe specialty. Giraffe, lion, zebra, warthog and a number of different antelope species are also often seen here. And if you’re lucky, you might even see a leopard. Hippos and crocs are also easy to spot in the water. Some Chobe safaris include a guided game drive in an open-sided 4WD vehicle, while others center on a boat safari. This involves traveling along the Chobe River in a boat and getting a whole new perspective on the riverfront. If you’re lucky, you might get to do both.”

2

How long does it take to get to Chobe from Victoria Falls?

“If you drive from Victoria Falls to Chobe Riverfront, it’s only 76km/47mi from Livingstone to the Botswana town of Kasane (which lies right alongside Chobe Riverfront). But when calculating how long it will take to get between the two, remember that the amount of time you spend at the Zimbabwe–Botswana border can vary, depending on how busy the crossing is that day. If you fly from Victoria Falls to Kasane, you won’t necessarily save very much time. You’ll still need to pass through immigration on arrival, and you also spend time checking in and waiting for departure. Whichever way you travel, the two destinations are so close that, with an early start, you should still be able to spend most of the day in Chobe.”

3

Is it better to fly or drive between Chobe and Victoria Falls?

“Both driving and flying between Chobe and Victoria Falls have their advantages. If you drive, you’ll get to see more of the country up close: part of the route passes through Zimbabwe’s Zambezi National Park and you’ll catch glimpses of the mighty Zambezi River along the way. It’s also a lot cheaper to drive than it is to fly. Flying might be slightly quicker than driving, but not by much. And flying to and from Chobe will also significantly increase the cost of your day trip. It does, however, mean that you’ll get to combine getting there and back with two scenic flights: expect incredible views on both legs of the journey.”

4

What is the best time of year for a Chobe safari?

“The best time of year for a Chobe safari along the Chobe Riverfront is during the Dry season, which runs from April to October. This is usually when you can expect clear skies, mild temperatures and otherwise good visibility. The longer the Dry season progresses, the more animals you’re likely to see. This is because from around August, and especially by October, water sources elsewhere in the park are starting to dry out, meaning that most animals will head toward the Riverfront where water is guaranteed year-round.”

Few parks in Africa have so much to offer. If you’ve never been on safari before (and perhaps even if you have), Chobe Riverfront will feel like a miracle – barely an hour from a town with excellent accommodation, filled with elephants,...

Crowds of Elephants and Zebras, a Short Hop From Victoria Falls

I consider Chobe one of the very best safari destinations, not just in Botswana, but in the entire continent. Whatever the season, a game drive or a leisurely boat trip in this large and fascinatingly diverse park count among Africa’s...

It was very easy to spot a few of the big 5. There were no zebras and we did not manage to see leopards. However, there were loads of elephants, saw several giraffes, buffalos, hippos, crocs and different antelopes. Spotted several birds.

Great scenery, abundance of life - both land and aquatic

Can be crowded in the mornings, as there aren't too many roads within the park - same may apply to river which could ruin your boat cruise experience. We were lucky not to encounter it directly though. As for wildlife - abundance of...

We have been to Chobe before many years ago however this time our Leopard sighting made it very special even if we only went to the Savuti area. I would definitely have flown in given the choice as the roads are bad.

Birders should absolutely do a boat cruise, it's a great way to see the water birds up close. Also a different perspective than the jeep so seeing the hippos, elephants, etc. from a different angle is great. We had incredible sunsets in...
