You will begin the trek in the middle of the night when the lava ash is still frozen, making it easier to walk. The ascent starts in darkness, passing Hans Meyer Cave at 5,200 m as you gradually climb. At sunrise, you reach Gilman’s Point (5,715 m) on the crater rim. From there, it takes about 1 to 2 more hours to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 m.
