Intimate Sabi Sand Encounters at Umkumbe

Umkumbe is one of several properties that make up the world-famous Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, which forms part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem with open fences to Kruger National Park. This location allows guests access to one of Africa’s most sought-after safari experiences, and, as with the entire Sabi Sands, leopard sightings here are exceptional.

Although Umkumbe is a relatively small property and does not currently have traversing rights to neighbouring properties, it still offers fantastic wildlife viewing. During our two-night stay, we were lucky enough to see all of the Big Five, as well as a variety of antelope, giraffes and other iconic species.

Umkumbe is relatively affordable compared to its competition in Sabi Sands, making it an attractive option for travellers who want the Sabi Sand experience without the premium price tag. The reserve has two lodges, and we stayed in Umkumbe Bush Lodge. The lodge has a modern feel – not the most rustic ‘bush’
Read more aesthetic, but very comfortable and pleasant. Meals are mostly served indoors, though there is a lovely outdoor area overlooking a waterhole, perfect for watching wildlife come to drink.
