The trek starts immediately through lush rainforest, where rain is common, making the trail muddy and slippery. A packed lunch will be enjoyed halfway along the route. By late afternoon, you arrive at Machame Camp 3020m, where your porters who arrive ahead of you will have set up your tent. After a short lunch and rest, the ascent continues along a rocky ridge onto the Shira Plateau. From here, you will enjoy breathtaking views, including the Western Breach and its striking glaciers, while Kibo rises directly to the east. Shira Cave to Lava Tower to Barranco

Today the route turns east into a semi-desert, rocky landscape leading to Lava Tower at 4,642m, reached after about five hours of trekking. Lunch is served at a designated spot, but this challenging day often introduces the first signs of altitude such as shortness of breath, irritability, or headaches. After lunch, you descend nearly 658m to Barranco Camp, a vital part of acclimatization. The two-hour descent offers excellent opportunities for photography, with striking views of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. Barranco Camp sits in a valley beneath the Great Barranco Wall, where a memorable sunset awaits as dinner is prepared. Overnight temperatures here can be cold, but the scenery more than rewards the effort.

Day 5

Barranco to Barafu camp

Barranco to Barafu camp

After spending the night at the foot of the imposing Barranco Wall, you begin the climb up this dramatic obstacle, which often proves easier than it first appears. Reaching the top just below the Heim Glacier, the beauty of Kilimanjaro unfolds before you. The trail descends through Karanga Valley, crosses ridges and valleys, then merges with the Mweka route the path used for descent. Turning left, a final push of about an hour brings you to Barafu Hut 4,673m, your base camp. Karanga Valley is the last water point. The camp, perched on a narrow and exposed ridge, lives up to its Swahili name, meaning ‘ice,’ with strong winds and freezing conditions. Before nightfall, familiarize yourself with the terrain. The summit lies 1,214m above, and your final ascent begins tonight. Prepare your gear, thermal clothing, hiking poles, headlamp, and spare batteries, and carry water in a thermal flask. By 19:00 you should rest as much as possible before the midnight summit attempt.

Barafu camp to Uhuru peak to Mweka camp

You rise around 23:30, have tea and biscuits, and set off into the night. The climb heads northwest through steep scree towards Stella Point 5,739m, reached after about six grueling hours. This section is often the toughest, both mentally and physically. At Stella Point, you pause briefly to witness a spectacular sunrise, weather permitting. From here, it is usually a snowy two-hour push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Time at the summit depends on conditions, as cold and fatigue make lingering difficult. After celebrating this remarkable achievement, descend to Barafu Camp in about three hours for a short rest and to collect your gear. The journey then continues down to Mweka Camp (3,090m), through rocky scree, moorland, and into forest. Expect mist or rain in the afternoon. Dinner and washing water will be ready as you enjoy your last night on Kilimanjaro.

At the gate, you register your details and receive your summit certificate: green for reaching Stella Point (5,739m) or gold for Uhuru Peak (5,895m). From here, continue with a short but often muddy 3 km walk to Mweka Village, where a hot lunch awaits.
