Known as the “endless plains,” the Serengeti supports more than two million wildebeest along with countless other species. From January to April, wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle give birth, attracting predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas that follow the migrating herds. The area is also home to smaller mammals including hyrax, bat-eared fox, mongoose, honey badger, jackal, monkeys, baboons, and African hare, as well as over 500 bird species. This immense caldera supports one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the world, hosting nearly all East African species, including the rare black rhino.
