North to Divundu – Gateway to the Okavango Wilderness
North to Divundu – Gateway to the Okavango Wilderness
After an unforgettable journey through Etosha, today marks a transition from arid savannah to lush riverine landscapes as you head north to Divundu—the eastern gateway to Namibia’s Caprivi Strip (now known as the Zambezi Region).
The drive takes you through changing scenery: from dusty plains to greener lands dotted with villages, baobab trees, and traditional homesteads. After several hours on the road, you’ll arrive in Divundu, nestled along the banks of the Okavango River, just before it fans out into the famous Okavango Delta across the border in Botswana.
This region is one of Namibia’s best-kept secrets. It’s lush, teeming with life, and wonderfully peaceful—a total contrast to the dry heart of Etosha. Here, rivers and floodplains attract wildlife year-round, and the pace of life slows down as you tune in to the rhythms of the river.

The drive takes most of the day, but it's a fascinating transition—from the tropical riverine ecosystems of the north to the dramatic, red sandstone cliffs rising above the bushveld below.
Waterberg is also a birding hotspot, with over 200 species recorded:
Black eagles, peregrine falcons, and verreaux’s eagles soar along the cliffs
Hartlaub’s francolin, Rüppell’s parrot, and other regional endemics
Woodland species like hornbills, barbets, and tchagras can be spotted in the surrounding forests.
