Kalahari Desert

Kalahari Desert

Arrive at Windhoek International Airport, collect your rental vehicle at the airport, and head to Kalahari Anib Lodge, where you’ll spend one night. The 3 hour drive from Hosea Kutako Airport to Kalahari Anib Lodge is smooth and scenic.
You’ll start on good tar roads through open acacia savanna, with wide horizons and scattered camelthorn trees. As you turn south, the landscape gradually shifts into the red-sand Kalahari, with rolling dune plains and tall golden grasses.

Along the way, it’s common to spot oryx, springbok, ostriches, and large sociable weaver nests perched on roadside poles. Approaching the lodge, the classic Kalahari scenery unfolds—red dunes, big skies, and peaceful open spaces.

Quiver Tree Forrest and Fish River

After breakfast make your way to Fish River Canyon. The 4 hour 20 min drive takes you through some of Namibia’s most varied desert scenery. You leave the red-sand Kalahari behind and head south across open semi-desert plains toward Keetmanshoop, with wide horizons and scattered wildlife such as springbok, kudu, and ostriches. The landscape becomes rockier as you enter the south, passing quiver tree forests, dry riverbeds, and volcanic outcrops. Near Canyon Lodge, the terrain shifts into dramatic stony desert with rugged hills, granite boulders, and deep valleys. It’s a smooth, scenic journey that highlights the transition from soft Kalahari dunes to the striking rock formations of the Fish River Canyon region.

Relax for the afternoon, or opt for a Sundowner Canyon Drive to end the day beautifully before returning for dinner.

Luderitz and Kolmanskop

After breakfast make your way to Luderitz where you will spend 1 night. The 4 hour 30 minute drive to Lüderitz takes you from the rocky desert of the Fish River Canyon into Namibia’s dramatic southern landscapes. You begin among rugged granite boulders and dry river valleys before joining long, open desert highways that stretch endlessly toward Aus. Along the way, expect sweeping views of vast gravel plains, distant mountains, and the striking emptiness that defines the Namib.

As you approach Aus, keep an eye out for the wild desert horses that roam this area. From Aus to Lüderitz, the scenery transforms again—the road cuts through the Namib Desert, with rolling dunes, shifting sands blown across the tar road, and an increasingly cool Atlantic breeze. The final stretch feels almost surreal as you descend into Lüderitz, a small coastal town surrounded by desert, ocean, and wind-sculpted landscapes.

After your visit, begin the scenic 1 hour 30 minute drive to Klein Aus Vista where you will spend 1 night.
