Lemosho gate to mti mkubwa camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (or Moshi/Arusha), where you’ll be welcomed by our team and transferred to a hotel for rest and briefing. Here, your guides will provide a full overview of the trek, including equipment checks, safety tips, and acclimatization advice to ensure a safe and enjoyable climb.

After a good rest and an early breakfast, you’ll be driven to the Lemosho trailhead, located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. From the trailhead, your trek begins through the lush rainforest zone, surrounded by towering trees, streams, and rich vegetation. The trail is gentle but gradually ascending, allowing your body to start adjusting to the altitude.

You will reach Big Tree Camp (approximately 2,600 meters / 8,530 feet) in the late afternoon. Here, you can relax, enjoy the scenery, and meet your trekking team, including porters and guides. Dinner is served at camp, followed by an early night to prepare for the next day’s hike.

After a hearty breakfast at Big Tree Camp, you’ll begin your trek higher up the mountain, leaving the rainforest behind and entering the heath and moorland zone. This day is slightly more challenging than Day 1, with a gradual ascent, allowing your body to continue acclimatizing to higher altitude.

The trail passes through open moorlands dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels, creating a unique and striking landscape. Along the way, you may spot small wildlife and birds, and your guides will provide interesting insights into Kilimanjaro’s flora, fauna, and geology.

By mid-afternoon, you’ll reach Shira 1 (approx. 3,600 meters / 11,483 feet), located on the western plateau of Kilimanjaro. This camp provides stunning views of the surrounding Shira Plateau and the distant Kibo Peak, and serves as an important stop for rest and acclimatization.

Today’s hike is moderate, with gentle slopes that help your body adjust to higher altitudes, preparing you for the more challenging sections ahead.

The trail winds through rolling moorlands dotted with giant lobelias, groundsels, and scattered volcanic rocks, with panoramic views of Kibo Peak on the horizon. The environment is drier and windswept, offering a dramatic change from the rainforest and heath zones. Layered clothing is recommended, as temperatures can be cool to cold, especially in the morning and evening.

You’ll reach Shira 2 Camp (approx. 3,850 meters / 12,630 feet) by early afternoon. Here, you can rest, hydrate, and enjoy the plateau’s breathtaking scenery, while your guides prepare camp for dinner and discuss the next day’s trek to Lava Tower and Baranco Camp.

After breakfast at Shira 2 Camp, you’ll continue your trek across the Shira Plateau toward Lava Tower, an important acclimatization point at higher altitude. Today’s hike is moderate but longer than previous days, allowing your body to adjust gradually to altitudes above 4,600 meters (15,092 ft).

The trail climbs through alpine desert terrain, with volcanic rock formations, giant lobelias, and expansive views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. This section offers spectacular photo opportunities and a true sense of Kilimanjaro’s vast wilderness.

Lava Tower (4,630 m / 15,190 ft) is a key acclimatization stop. Here, you’ll pause for lunch and rest, allowing your body to adapt to the higher elevation before descending to Baranco Camp.
From Lava Tower, the trail descends gently along scenic valleys toward Baranco Camp (3,960 m / 12,992 ft). Baranco is famous for its stunning cliff backdrop, the iconic Baranco Wall, and its position amidst dramatic high-altitude landscapes.

Today is moderate in distance but includes an iconic climbing experience: the famous Baranco Wall, a vertical rock face that is one of Kilimanjaro’s most memorable landmarks.

The Baranco Wall (approx. 80–100 meters / 260–330 ft high) may look daunting, but don’t worry — it’s a scramble rather than a technical climb, and your experienced guides will carefully lead you step by step. Handholds, ropes, and your team’s guidance make it safe for all trekkers with reasonable fitness.
After conquering the Baranco Wall, the trail descends gently into the Karanga Valley (3,995 m / 13,110 ft). You’ll stop to rest, hydrate, and enjoy lunch, while taking in the scenery and appreciating the progress you’ve made.

The trail is rocky and exposed, offering breathtaking views of Kibo Peak, glaciers, and surrounding valleys. The ascent is gradual, and your experienced guides will monitor your pace, hydration, and overall well-being, ensuring a safe and comfortable trek.
Upon arrival at Barafu Base Camp, you’ll settle into your tents, rest, and enjoy a high-energy dinner to fuel your summit attempt. Barafu to summit

The adventure reaches its climactic moment as you begin your midnight climb from Barafu Base Camp (4,600 m / 15,092 ft) toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa. You’ll start the trek around 11:00 PM, moving in small, steady steps under the guidance of your experienced trekking team.

The climb is challenging due to the thin air, cold temperatures, and steep slopes, but the stunning night sky, stars, and anticipation of the sunrise make it an unforgettable experience. Your guides ensure your safety, pace, and well-being throughout the ascent, offering encouragement, advice, and support.
After 6–8 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Uhuru Peak, just in time to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the African plains. Standing at the roof of Africa, you’ll feel a profound sense of achievement, exhilaration, and connection with nature.

The descent is gentle but requires care on muddy or slippery sections. Your guides will ensure your safety, help carry gear if needed, and provide encouragement and guidance as you complete your trek. Along the way, enjoy the forest scenery, and reflect on your accomplishment.

Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you’ll be greeted with certificates of achievement recognizing your successful climb to Kilimanjaro’s summit. This is a moment to celebrate your accomplishment, take group photos, and say farewell to your guides and support team.
