Day 1

In the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel or the airport and transferred to Arusha National Park, heading straight to the trailhead. The drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, during which you may spot wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, and various antelopes along the way.

Upon arrival at Momella Gate, your guides will take care of the entry permit formalities. From here, your trek to Miriakamba Huts begins, accompanied by an armed park ranger. As you walk through the open grasslands, keep an eye out for giraffes and buffaloes. After around two hours, you will reach Maio Falls – a scenic spot ideal for a rest and picnic. The trek then continues to the famous “fig tree arch” before finally arriving at Miriakamba Huts in time for afternoon tea and snacks.

Day 2

After breakfast, you will begin your trek along a steep trail with wooden steps. The higher altitude brings cooler temperatures, making the walk feel refreshing and slightly easier than the previous day. Mist often lingers in the rainforest, creating a mysterious and enchanting atmosphere among the lush vegetation.

After about two hours of uphill hiking, you will reach the viewpoint known as Mgongo wa Tembo(“Elephant’s Back”) at 3,200 meters, a perfect spot to take a well-earned break and enjoy the scenery. From here, the landscape gradually transforms from dense rainforest to heather and moorland. By around midday, you will arrive at Saddle Hutswhere a warm meal awaits. You will rest early in preparation for your midnight wake-up call.

Day 3

You will rise at midnight for the challenging trek to Socialist Peak, so be prepared for a demanding and tiring climb. Guided by headlamps, you will follow the trail through bushland to Rhino Point at 3,821 meters. The sections leading to Rhino Point and Cobra Point are particularly steep, so caution is essential.

After approximately 4 to 5 hours of uphill trekking, you will reach Socialist Peak, where you can witness the sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro and take in the breathtaking view of Mount Meru’s crater, with its steep walls and central ash cone. The descent retraces the same route back to Saddle Huts, where you can rest and recharge with hot soup and tea. From there, the trek continues down to Miriakamba Hut for your overnight stay.

After breakfast, you will begin your descent from Miriakamba Huts back to Momella Gate An early morning start offers the best opportunity to observe wildlife, as many animals are most active at this time.

Upon reaching Momella Gate, the African Wanderlust Adventures team will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Arusha, a journey of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
