In the morning, take a domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the capital of the Afar Regional State. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and begin the drive across the harsh yet striking Afar desert landscape. As you travel deeper into the region, you’ll pass by small Afar settlements and nomadic communities who survive in one of the most extreme environments on Earth. Arrive at Hamdella, often called the “gateway to the Danakil Depression,” in the afternoon. After settling in, explore the surrounding salt flats and watch the Afar people and camel caravans transporting salt blocks across the endless white plains. Overnight at a simple campsite under a blanket of stars.

Hamdella – Danakil Depression (Dallol & Erta Ale Volcano)

After breakfast, set out for an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Danakil Depression, one of the lowest and hottest places on the planet. Visit the incredible Dallol hydrothermal area, where the ground is painted in surreal shades of yellow, green, and orange from sulfur and mineral deposits. Witness bubbling acid pools and otherworldly salt formations that make this landscape look almost alien. Continue toward the Erta Ale volcano, known for its continuously active lava lake—one of only a few in the world. Overnight camping near Erta Ale.

Erta Ale – Semera – Fly Back to Addis Ababa

Rise early to enjoy the sunrise over the volcanic landscape, then begin your descent from Erta Ale. Drive back across the desert plains, retracing your route through the Afar region toward Semera. Along the way, take time to appreciate the rugged beauty of the terrain and the resilience of the Afar people who inhabit this extreme environment. Arrive in Semera in the afternoon and transfer to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa, concluding your extraordinary adventure through one of the most geologically and culturally fascinating regions on Earth.
