Optional ascent to Asheton Maryam Cave Church; visit Yemrehanna Kristos Monastery You have the option to either drive most of the way (approximately 35-40 minutes) and hike the last 20 minutes to Asheton Maryam Cave Church, or hike the entire distance from town. After your visit, return to Lalibela for lunch. Next, drive 42 kilometers to the Monastery of Yemrehanna Kristos, a unique wooden and granite church built inside a cavern before the time of King Lalibela. Explore the only floating church in the area, Yimerhane Kristos Cave Church, which is carefully carved out of marble stone. Walk into the backyard to see the thousands of skeletal remains of those who came to die in that holy place.
