On the way, stop at scenic Lake Hawassa before proceeding to Abijatta-Shalla National Park, which spans 887 sq km and features two very distinct lakes. Shalla, covering 410 sq km, lies in a collapsed volcanic caldera and reaches depths of over 260 m, making it Ethiopia’s deepest lake. Abijatta, in contrast, is shallow at just 14 m and highly alkaline. Its waters are shrinking rapidly due to irrigation and a nearby soda-ash factory, highlighting the environmental challenges in the region.
