Your safari begins with an early morning pick up in Kigali, followed by a scenic drive through Rwanda’s famously green hills and rural countryside. As you travel north, you will enjoy views of terraced farms, small villages, and everyday local life before reaching the Uganda-Rwanda border. After completing border formalities, you continue into southwestern Uganda, where the landscape gradually changes into dense forested hills. The journey is relaxed with stops along the way for refreshments and lunch, allowing you to stretch and enjoy the scenery. By late afternoon, you arrive in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park area, check in at your lodge, and settle in for the evening. Dinner is served at the lodge as your guide briefs you on the following day’s gorilla trekking experience.

Day 2

After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for a comprehensive briefing conducted by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, who explain the trekking guidelines and gorilla behavior. You are then assigned a gorilla family and begin your guided trek into the dense rainforest, accompanied by experienced trackers and armed rangers for safety. The trek can take anywhere from a couple of hours to longer, depending on the movement of the gorillas, and involves walking through thick vegetation, uneven terrain, and forest trails. Once the gorilla family is located, you are allowed one magical hour to observe them up close as they feed, groom, play, and interact in their natural environment. This powerful and emotional encounter is often described as a life-changing experience. After the trek, you return to the park headquarters, then back to the lodge to relax, enjoy a warm meal, and reflect on this extraordinary wildlife encounter.

Following breakfast, you depart Bwindi and drive toward Lake Bunyonyi, a journey that takes you through some of the most picturesque countryside in southwestern Uganda. Along the way, you pass rolling hills, cultivated terraces, and traditional homesteads, offering a glimpse into rural Ugandan life. Upon arrival at Lake Bunyonyi, you are welcomed by calm waters, cool breezes, and breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and islands. The afternoon is spent at leisure, allowing you to slow down after the excitement of gorilla trekking. You may choose to relax at the lodge, enjoy the views from your balcony, take a gentle canoe ride on the lake, or enjoy a guided nature walk depending on time and interest. The peaceful setting of Lake Bunyonyi provides the perfect contrast to the forest adventure of the previous day.

The drive is broken up with planned stops for lunch and short breaks, ensuring a comfortable journey. After crossing back into Rwanda, you continue to Kigali, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening. You are dropped off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport, marking the end of your cross-border gorilla trekking and Lake Bunyonyi safari, with unforgettable memories of East Africa’s landscapes, wildlife, and people.
