Day 1
Drive to Melka Kunture Archaeological Site. Visit the on-site museum, displaying stone tools, fossils, and reconstructions of early human life from the Oldowan to the Late Stone Age. Walk to nearby excavation areas and observe the Awash River landscape, where ancient hominins crafted obsidian tools.
Drive to Adadi Mariam, Ethiopia’s southernmost rock-hewn church. Descend into the cool, dimly lit chambers carved directly from rock. Observe the grass-covered roof topped with ostrich eggs, symbols of purity and renewal. Meet local priests and learn about the church’s living traditions dating back to the 12th–13th centuries.
Continue to the UNESCO-listed Tiya site. Explore 36 standing stones, including 32 engraved stelae decorated with swords, symbolic figures, and human carvings. Learn from local guides about theories regarding their purpose as burial markers, memorials, or symbols of ancient warriors.
