Victoria Fall

Why is Victoria Falls special?
Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or ‘The Smoke That Thunders’, Victoria Falls was listed by UNESCO in 1989 for its geological and ecological importance.

At peak flow, more than 500 million cubic meters of water crash over the edge every minute, making this the largest single sheet of falling water, and one of the most powerful waterfalls on the planet.

This torrent creates a huge cloud of spray that rises high above the gorge, drenching visitors and forming rainbows in the sunlight.

In the heart of Botswana’s Chobe National Park lies a dynamic wilderness, a sweeping expanse of savannah brooded over by several rocky outcrops which guard a relic marsh and the dry channel that was once its lifeline. This is Savute, where mysterious wet and dry cycles mould the landscape and dictate the nature of its wild inhabitants. During the arid winter months game viewing concentrates on Savute’s resident bull elephants, antelope and lion prides, and black-backed jackal, bat-eared foxes, tsessebe, and kudu, abound. The summer rains bring a feast for lion, hyena and cheetah as thousands of migrating zebra and wildebeest assemble in a chaotic pattern on the marsh.

Khwai

Today in a permanent Game Drive we will cross Okavango Delta direction Khwai Concession.
African wild dogs, cheetahs, and leopards, visitors frequently spot large herds of elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, and various antelope species, including red lechwe.
The Khwai area of the Okavango lies along the northern boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve. This is an unfenced boundary allowing wildlife to move freely between the woodlands in the wet season when water is plentiful and back to permanent rivers and lagoons in the dry season. The Khwai area offers the same wildlife experience as the reserve with the added advantage of being a private concession which means the ability to do walking safaris and night drives.

Khwai Concession

Khwai Concession

The Khwai Community Concession is situated in the extreme north east of the Okavango Delta and is controlled by the Khwai Community through the Khwai Development Trust. Khwai is also known as a good area for lion sightings with large prides. Leopards are also in the Khwai area in good number; they love the mix of riparian forest with its large trees and open areas. Roan antelope is more likely to be sighted here than in many other concessions.
Birds- Birdlife is excellent and varied: see the stunningly colourful lilac-breasted roller and numerous other species including both saddle-billed and marabou storks. There are many more aquatic birds in the wet season as the concession has only a small area of the Khwai River in terms of permanent water. Raptors are particularly numerous here.
