The crater floor consists of wide open grasslands, freshwater springs, swamps, small forests, and Lake Magadi, a shallow alkaline lake located at the center of the crater. These different habitats provide food and water for many animals throughout the year.
The lush grasslands support large populations of grazing animals such as zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, and buffaloes, while the forest areas on the crater rim provide shelter for elephants and other wildlife. The permanent water sources also attract many bird species, including flamingos that gather around Lake Magadi.
