Day 1

Arusha to Amani Nature Reserve

Arusha to Amani Nature Reserve

The safari begins with a morning pick-up from Arusha Bus Stand and transferred to a bus stand, followed by a scenic drive to Muheza where you will be taken by private vehicle toward the (Amani Nature Reserve) East Usambara Mountains. As the road ascends into the highlands, dry savannah landscapes gradually give way to lush montane rainforest. Arrival is scheduled for the afternoon at the Zigi Amani Forest Rest House, where you will settle in and receive a comprehensive briefing from your specialist herpetology guide.
As dusk falls, a short introductory night walk is conducted around the lodge grounds. This first survey focuses on nocturnal amphibians and reptiles, particularly tree frogs and ground-dwelling species, while also serving as an orientation to field safety protocols and ethical observation techniques. Overnight accommodation is at Zigi Forest Rest House or the nearby campsite on a full-board basis.

Zigi to Amani Nature Reserve Headquarters – Full-Day Herpetological Traverse

Today is devoted to a full-day herpetology-focused walk from Zigi to the Amani Nature Reserve headquarters. This route traverses a classic Eastern Arc “sky island” landscape, where long-term isolation has produced remarkable levels of amphibian and reptile endemism. The terrain includes village footpaths, old forestry tracks, and steep forest trails, with a noticeable elevation gain as you approach Amani.
The walk itself functions as a continuous biodiversity survey. Your guide will interpret microhabitats along the way, from leaf litter and fallen logs to stream banks and moss-covered rocks. Early departure allows observation of nocturnal species still active at dawn, followed by diurnal reptiles emerging to bask. A packed lunch is enjoyed en route, surrounded by pristine rainforest. Arrival at Amani headquarters is in the late afternoon, with overnight accommodation at the Tanzania Forest Service Rest House or campsite on a full-board basis.

A visit to a rainforest monitoring plot highlights ongoing conservation research. The route then descends toward Kwamkoro Forest Reserve, where lunch is taken at the forest edge while surveying transitional habitats. In Kwamkoro village, a guided walk and beekeeping project visit show community conservation, followed by a nocturnal survey for geckos, frogs, and snakes.
