Arrival in Blantyre

Arrive in Blantyre, where your family will be met and transferred to Protea Hotel Blantyre Ryalls for your first night in Malawi. This is deliberately an easy beginning to the journey, giving everyone time to settle in after the international flight before travelling into the highlands the following morning.

The Zomba Plateau

Travel into the highlands for two nights near the Zomba Plateau, where cooler air, forests and mountain scenery provide a gentle introduction to Malawi.

Explore together on walking trails through the forest, discover waterfalls and viewpoints, look for colourful birdlife or enjoy a picnic surrounded by the landscape. A visit towards Emperor’s View reveals far reaching views across southern Malawi, while the plateau offers plenty of opportunities to explore without the days feeling overly structured.

For families, Zomba provides an active but relaxed beginning to the journey before you continue into Liwonde for your first safari.

Liwonde National Park

Continue into Liwonde National Park for three nights at Mvuu Camp, where your family safari begins beside the Shire River.

Explore on game drives in search of elephant, antelope and the park’s predators, while boat safaris provide a completely different experience as you watch hippos, crocodiles and wildlife gathering along the riverbanks. Evening drives reveal the bush after dark, while guided walks may also be possible depending on the ages of your children.

Three nights gives younger travellers time to settle into the rhythm of safari rather than rushing through it. The variety is particularly good for families, combining vehicles, boats and time at camp so that every day does not follow exactly the same routine.

Lake Malawi

Leave Liwonde and continue to the shores of Lake Malawi for four nights at Makokola Retreat. After the early mornings and excitement of safari, these final days are deliberately slower and give the whole family time to enjoy the lake.

Swim in the clear water, snorkel among colourful cichlid fish or spend time kayaking, sailing and enjoying other watersports. Children have space to play while parents can relax beside the lake, and days can be as active or as easy as everyone wants.

Four nights means there is no pressure to fill every day. It gives you time to enjoy Lake Malawi properly and provides a wonderfully relaxed ending to your family adventure.
