Olduvai Gorge became internationally known through the discoveries of archaeologists Louis Leakey and Mary Leakey, who uncovered ancient fossils and stone tools dating back nearly two million years. Significant findings included remains of early human ancestors such as Homo habilis and Australopithecus boisei.

Stretching about 48 kilometers, the gorge was formed through erosion over thousands of years, exposing layers of volcanic ash and sediment rich in prehistoric fossils.
